Our History

How CAPS Came to Be

The Center for Applied Psychological Science (CAPS) was founded from a simple but important observation: many people seeking psychological help were forced to choose between highly academic expertise and genuinely practical, human-centered care. Too often, psychological services felt either overly clinical and impersonal or supportive but lacking scientific rigor.

CAPS was created to bridge that gap.

From the beginning, the vision behind CAPS was to build a practice where psychological science could be applied thoughtfully to real-world challenges — not just within traditional therapy, but across education, testing, relationships, performance, career development, emotional wellness, and everyday functioning. The goal was never simply to diagnose problems, but to help people better understand themselves, identify meaningful solutions, and move forward more effectively.

Over time, CAPS evolved into a multidisciplinary practice serving individuals, families, students, professionals, and organizations with a wide range of needs. As the practice grew, so did its recognition that emotional health, cognitive functioning, learning, relationships, stress, identity, performance, and life circumstances are deeply interconnected. This led to a broader, more integrative approach that values the whole person rather than reducing individuals to symptoms or labels.

The name “Applied Psychological Science” reflects this philosophy directly. Psychology is not viewed as abstract theory alone, but as a powerful tool for improving lives when grounded in evidence, compassion, curiosity, and practical application.

Today, CAPS continues to evolve with the same core mission that inspired its creation: combining scientific integrity with individualized care to help people gain clarity, build resilience, overcome obstacles, and reach their potential in meaningful and sustainable ways.
